we were on a high ridge overlooking a harbour. there was a large island in the center of the harbour. we were on a school or band related field trip or something. the island was bustling with activity, it was an industrial area and our destination. there are flashes of light on the island. i overhear someone say that their aunt works in the plant on the island, and they were doing experiments which involved light, explaining the strange flashes. we walk around a turn, which would bring the island into full view. the teacher suddenly becomes very grave, and he begins to tell everyone to remain calm. i notice nothing amiss. the radio comes on and the voice on the radio is in french, and there is orchestral music in the background. i don't understand the french. then i look at those around me.
someone is wandering around aimlessly, muttering to himself and strumming a guitar wildly, trying to drown out the sound of the radio. girls are huddled together crying. i look down at the island and i realize that the flashes are from cannon and machine guns, and for some reason a ship was rising on a huge wave that was about to rebound off of the island and come back in our direction. pandemonium strikes, and i search round wildly until i find melissa and danny. i drag them to the lone house on the ridge.
i know on the door and scream at the family about the tidal wave that was getting ever closer. they have a car but i wonder if they'll take us or even if they'll have room, because the family was very large. they come out of the house, i realize they don't speak english. i try to ask them if they'll take us along but they're frantic and they don't understand me anyway. they run back into the house for some reason, to get something. looking over my shoulder, i realize we don't have time to wait because the wave is almost upon us. so we jump in the car. there is no key, but i can turn the ignition with my hand.
we drive away wildly, uphill and inland as much as possible. i was driving, the car was hard to steer but melissa and danny helped me and reassured me. after driving for a while, we reached other towns, like glace bay, but they were all burning. there were signs posted on telephone poles. the invading army had posted them, they had the rules for the new world, including a new time system, new calendar system, and a new measurement system. i kept driving, but no area seemed unscathed.
i had to avoid shard of metal rolling towards the car, ready to slash tires. as i realized the whole world was experiencing this, and that no place was safe, i woke up shaking, my breath hard to come by, and my head pounding.
